WHAT IS THE ADAC? The ADAC (Ateneu d’Acció Cultural), an association founded in Girona in 1981, has as its principal aim to promote the Catalan language and the culture and nation of Catalonia. To fulfil this goal the ADAC divides its activities into the following sections: SECTIONS:Linguistic commission: It organises several activities to promote our language, among which the Normalization Prizes (prizes for cultural activities and creations in Catalan and related to Catalan culture) can be highlighted. These prizes have been awarded for about 20 years and they have obtained much recognition and prestige in the local society of Girona. Socio-cultural
commission: It organises the Correllengua
(activities to promote the Catalan
language organised in coordination with other entities throughout
Catalonia), the traditional Saint John’s Bonfire, the
celebrations of September 11th and October 15th,
together with history courses, cultural excursions, the Quina
(a popular Catalan game similar to
bingo which is played at Christmas time) and the well-known Sopars-Tertúlia
(dinners with a guest speaker and a debate) which are a forum for
discussion that this year has reached its 100th anniversary
dinner. Mountain section: It is the ADAC’s most dynamic commission and through it walking excursions are organised at different levels of difficulty around the Girona region. Chess section: This section encourages chess among all members of the association, especially among the younger ones. It organises courses with internationally recognised teachers and participation in chess competitions at local, national and international level. Cyclo-tourist group: Since 1990, the ADAC has also included a group which organises monthly bike excursions to promote both physical exercise and a deeper knowledge of the country among the members of the association. The trips are usually around the Girona region, but over the last few years some bike tours outside Catalonia have also been organised to Menorca, Formentera and more recently to Alghero (Sardinia).

. THE ROUTES OF THE ADAC’S CYCLO-TOURIST GROUPWe cycle in search of fun, for sport and for culture. We think that cycling is a great way of spending our free time in the open air. Our routes are usually of moderate difficulty: we do not choose the rough BTT routes with many steep slopes and jumps. We prefer secondary roads and quiet lanes and we avoid cars as much as possible. However, if we have a little adventure on the way it is also welcome.
