Description of the cycling route: This
route starts right in the heart of the Costa Brava, in front of the
tourist office in L’Estartit. You
follow the old, traditional way used for going from l’Estartit to
Torroella de Montgrí, you cycle alongside two rivers (the Ter and the Daró),
through some villages (Gualta and Serra de Daró), near some others
(Matajudaica) and you come to Castell d’Empordà. At
the end of the 12th century, a fortress was built by count Ponç
V of Empúries in this place, the so-called “turó de Marenys” (hill
of Marenys) which was then on the border of the royal domain of Girona.
From the old rampart, there is only one doorway
to be seen. You
cycle in the direction of Ullastret and past the church of Sant Martí de
Llaneres, dating from 1101, but which has been rebuilt several times
afterwards. In
Ullastret, we can admire several important remains of the Middle Ages, the
whole of the village has been declared a historico-artistic monument.
About two kilometres away, you will find the important archaeological
remains of the ancient Iberian town of Ullastret. On
your way back, you cycle through Llabià, reaching a height which will
give you
a
good panoramic view of the region. Then you continue cycling again to
Gualta, Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit. Vegetation:
irrigated
crops and olive
tree plantations English version: Sara Puigdemont and Vivien Greatorex
