Nº 13 THE HERMITAGES OF CALDES DE MALAVELLA |
Caldes de Malavella – Franciac – Sant Andreu Salou – Santa Seclina – Sant Maurici – Sant Sebastià - Caldes de Malavella |

|
Description of the cycling route: This
route runs through fields and Mediterranean woods on the edge of the
regions of La Selva and El Gironès. It
follows the route indicated with yellow and white marks such as PR (in
Catalan “Petit
Recorregut”), a short distance route which in this case is called
“Ruta de les Hermites de Caldes” or Route of the Caldes’ Hermitages.
If you wish to see the PR route, take a look at the webpage of the
municipality of Caldes de Malavella: www.caldesdemalavella.com/turisme/catala/itineraris.htm#i). The original route
has been only very slightly modified because the track had become grown
over in some places. The
route follows mud tracks in quite good a state most of the time, but you
also find some paths which are not so evident and some secondary roads.
You ride through a hilly landscape without very high tops, and even if you
keep riding up and down all the time the route can be undertaken by any
person who is used to riding a bicycle. The
route starts at the train station of Caldes de Malavella, it crosses under
the railway line and continues in the direction of Franciac. From the
Church in Franciac you continue to that in Sant Andreu Salou in the
municipality of Cassà de la Selva, and from there to the hermitage of
Santa Cecilia (which has been transformed into a hostel) and that of Sant
Maurici (which is by the Castle of Caldes) and of Sant Sebastià (a very
small hermitage situated beside a large farm house). NOTES -
It is necesary to cross road C-235 at two points on the route,
which in the summer season can turn out to be both difficult and dangerous.
This is why we propose alternative routes which we have marked with dots
on the map of the route and in the roadbook. -
In Caldes de Malavella, we find where to buy food and drink, and
other services such as a hotel,
restaurants and medical services. -
Caldes is located at about 20 km from Girona. You can get there on
the N-II, which is the road from Girona to Barcelona, and also via the
road from Girona to Llagostera and Platja d’Aro (taking the junction at
the point where the ringroad passes around Cassa de la Selva), from the
highway AP7 taking the exit in Vilobí and going in the direction of Cassà
de la Selva, and also from the end of the road called the Eix Transversal,
taking the N-II in the direction of Barcelona and leaving this road in
Caldes Xesca
