Description of the cycling route: This
cycling route runs through the north-west area of the region of El Gironès. You
leave from Girona and you come back to the same place. You ride mostly
along narrow or secondary asphalted roads and only while going up to Biert
(and descending the same way) do you cycle on a mud track. It
is a hilly landscape, where you ride up and down all the time. You cross
through woods and over fields; you ride beside some farm houses and near
small villages, like Collsacarrera, Montcal, Adri, Canet d’Adri and
Cartellà, and you can visit some churches such as those of Sant Medí (beside
the “The Cistertian Convent of Santa Maria de Cadins), Sant Llorenç
d’Adri (a Romanesque church from the X-XIth centuries located in the
hamlet of Adri) and Sant Vicenç (another Romanesque church in the same
municipality of Canet d’Adri). Biert is the highest point on the route.
It is a hamlet which is no longer inhabited, where at the moment you can
only find a church and a detached house. It is at about 400 m above sea
level on the way to Rocacorba, the highest mountain in the region of El
Gironès (991, 80 m above sea level). Along
the second part of the route, beside the village of Canet d’Adri, we
arrive at the so-called “Gorgues de Canet” (the ponds of Canet) or
“Font de la Torre” (Tower Spring). These pools are formed along the
course of the Canet stream.
At the moment, you are not allowed to swim in the pools, however it is
worth a visit and a walk to the place. After
about 30 km you arrive back in Girona by cycling through the municipality
of Cartellà. NOTES:
Apart from Girona and Canet d’Adri, the rest of the villages that you
cycle through are very small and they have no places where you can buy
food or drinks. In Canet d’Adri there is only one shop, beside the
village hall, where you can buy food, but you can find a number of
restaurants where you can have a good meal. On
May 1st, in Cartellà you can attend the celebration of the Day
of the Charcoal Burner and you can see a demonstration of how charcoal
used to be made in the woods. Also in Cartellà, you can visit the
ecomuseum of the Vall del Llémena (Llemena Valley) which is in the
rectory. If you want to visit it, you should get in touch with the
cultural association Ateneu de la Vall del Llémena (tel. 972 428 610). Xesca English version: Sara Puigdemont and Vivien Greatorex
